Artist Nasser Al-Sumi

Artist Nasser Al-Sumi was born in Jenin in 1948.

He studied fine arts in Damascus and France, He held personal exhibitions and participated in a number of group exhibitions. His works have been exhibited at the Tokyo Museum, the National Museum in Madrid, and the Arab World Institute in Paris. Sumi’s work can be found in public collections located in the National Museum of Modern Art in Tunisia and the Iraqi National Museum.

Nasser Al-Sumi work is based on converting ordinary materials into artworks, most of his works are distinguished by the indigo color.

The artist Nasser Al-Sumi is one of the most important symbols of Palestinian modernity in the reality of beautifulness of Palestinian Arab fine art. It combines the mentality of the East and the West, which makes his conceptual art research one of the most important experiments for Palestinian artists. He was one of the first Arab artists who were interested in contemporary art tried to understand and comprehend its appearance.

He practiced painting, sculpting, performing, and making video films as part of his commitment to conceptual art. He also an author, he wrote books such as: “Palestine and the olive tree”.

As for the indigo color in most of his paintings, it is his way of expressing his loyalty to his nation and homeland. As the indigo plant was grown in Palestine and used to wash and dye the Palestinian traditional dress.

Sumi’s works are connected to the place and public life.

He held his first solo exhibition in Beirut in 1979.

In 2014, he participated in the group exhibition (Bridge to Palestine) in Beirut. Where did he exhibited his work “Icons of Jaffa”.

In 2022, he participated in a group exhibition “Collective Spring” at Zawya Gallery in Ramallah.
